Precinct Count Optical Scanners

In a precinct count system, after the voter has marked their ballot they insert it into the optical scanner. They receive immediate overvote/undervote notification, before the ballot is accepted.

Examples Of Large States & Cities Using Precinct-Count Optical Scan

Illinois - The State of Illinois is an example of a large urban state that has successfully used precinct-count optical scan systems for their elections. For example, 41% of the population of Illinois voters (5 million) uses such systems. Will County, Illinois has posted a web page describing their rationale for choosing a precinct-count optical scan solution.

Arizona - 80% of the State of Arizona, including Phoenix, uses precinct-count optical scan.

Michigan - The Secretary of State of Michigan has recommended that that entire State use precinct-count optical scan.

Seattle - An example of another large city that uses precinct-count optical scan is Seattle.

Other states that use mostly precinct-count optical scan systems also include South Dakota and Minnesota.
